$300K bail for father of NBA star arrested following Las Vegas stabbing

Updated August 21, 2025 - 7:42 pm

A judge set $300,000 bail Thursday for a man arrested following a stabbing in west Las Vegas who is the father of a National Basketball Association star.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Quenton Marcelles Brown, 57, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder following the stabbing, which was reported just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the 1500 block of South Buffalo Drive.

A male victim was transported to a local hospital Wednesday after suffering “several stab wounds,” police said.

Brown is the father of Boston Celtics star guard and NBA champion Jaylen Brown, defense attorney Arnold Weinstock said following an initial appearance hearing Thursday.

Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Suzan Baucum said she was concerned about the danger Brown posed to the community and whether he would return to court.

“The allegations contained in the police report indicate that you were getting out of your vehicle and maybe bumped into the vehicle next to you, then the victim gets out and it kind of goes from there, but that you did stab this individual in the back and in other areas of their body multiple times,” said the judge.

In addition to the bail amount, Baucum ordered Brown — who used a wheelchair in court — to be subject to high-level electronic monitoring if he is released. Weinstock said his client will be on house arrest if he leaves jail.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Richard Scow said Brown stabbed the victim repeatedly.

A witness said the first stab was to the victim’s back while he walked away from the suspect, according to Scow. Then, he said, Brown stabbed the man in the chest, the hand and possibly in other locations.

“Because the defendant challenged the victim to a fight in this case, that precludes him from claiming self-defense, not that that would even be an option in this case because he attacked the victim from behind,” said the prosecutor.

Scow requested the $300,000 bail and high-level electronic monitoring, saying prosecutors were concerned Brown posed a flight risk. He said Brown had a prior domestic battery conviction and a warrant in Georgia.

Baucum said the Georgia warrant appeared to stem from failing to appear.

Weinstock painted a very different picture.

“My client was basically the victim in this case,” he said. “He was in a vehicle when the alleged victim in this case actually attacked the car that my client was in.”

The man tried to get Brown, a former heavyweight champion boxer, to fight him and hit Brown over the head with a gun, said Weinstock. After that, the lawyer argued, Brown was “trying to defend himself.”

Brown has lived in Las Vegas for a long time and has family support, said the lawyer, who recommended $25,000 to $50,000 bail. Weinstock said his client has suffered from medical issues and recently underwent surgery.

As of Thursday afternoon, Brown remained listed on a Clark County Detention Center online roster.

A four-time NBA all-star, Jaylen Brown was part of the 2024 Celtics team that captured the NBA championship. He was named NBA Finals MVP that year.

A message to the Boston Celtics was not immediately returned Thursday morning.

Weinstock said after court that he thinks Brown will be able to post bail.

Brown is due back in court Aug. 26.
