In addition to a commemorative art piece, the Haleamaus received $3,500 from the council to continue sharing and teaching Hawaii’s cultural traditions in Las Vegas, nicknamed “the ninth island” by Hawaiians in Southern Nevada.

“Their performances are so authentic and warm,” commented NAC board member Irma Varela-Wynants, who presented the Haleamaus’ award during the Winchester celebration. “I have followed them since they came to Las Vegas and feel so inspired witnessing their work.”

The Heritage Award — a cobalt glass piece with a silver map of Nevada, made by Carson City artist Jarill Ristine — recognizes artists who carry on folk traditions of their families and communities by teaching and practicing at the highest levels of authenticity. The NAC presents the award annually to those involved in the traditional arts.
