Dining out: Dougie J’s Cafe

DINING OUT

DOUGIE J’S CAFE, 603 LAS VEGAS BLVD. SOUTH

Dougie J’s Cafe opened Friday at Las Vegas Boulevard South and Bonneville Avenue. Owned by Suni Chabrow and Jess Marchese, it’s named for Chabrow’s son, SPC Douglas J. Green, who was 23 when he was killed in action in August in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Chabrow said the idea came from Marchese, whose law office is above the formerly empty space that in a previous life was the Strip Sandwich Shop. She’s friends with Marchese’s wife, and “I would go to their house, where he would prepare these amazing meals.” His interest grew, she said, “especially when he said, ‘Do you want to name it Dougie J’s Cafe?’ Doug loved that kind of food, burgers, steak and comfort food. I just knew it was something I had to be a part of.”

“I thought it would be really cool if we could name something after a fallen soldier,” Marchese said.

The restaurant has patriotic decor representing all branches of the service.

“You come in and get a little slice of America,” Chabrow said. Here’s a sample of the menu:

Breakfast: Sweet potato and chorizo hash with three over-easy eggs and bread, $14; Huevos Rancheros, $12; Big O’s thick-cut brioche French toast, $9; regular, blueberry, banana, chocolate chip or granola pancakes, $9; oatmeal with sauteed cinnamon apples, granola and Greek yogurt, $8.

Salads: The Specialist (spinach, orzo, cherry tomatoes, feta, Kalamata olives, lemon-herb vinaigrette), $7 for a whole, $5 for a half; The Big Jake (romaine, grilled chicken, Caesar dressing, garlic croutons), $13/$8; The Texas Vault (bacon lardons, fried potato cubes, cherry tomatoes, romaine and mustard vinaigrette), $12/$8; The Closer (penne pasta with fresh basil pesto), $8/$5.50.

The hotly debated surcharges have grown in popularity among restaurateurs, who say they rely on the fees to afford increases in labor costs or to boost pay for back-of-house workers who aren’t tipped.
