Dining Pick of the Week: Rumbi Island Grill

Rumbi Island Grill

4680 S. Maryland Parkway, 702-868-2911

On the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Maryland Parkway, nestled next to the hub of UNLV, is Rumbi Island Grill. The eatery evokes a tropical food paradise with a vibrantly painted mural of Hawaii lining the back wall, and brightly colored orchids acting as the centerpiece for the dining room’s wooden tables. Over-the-counter ordering makes for fast service. Rice bowls start at $7.95 for a half order and $8.95 for full. First, pick a protein: fire-grilled chicken, luau pork or tofu, or select steak for $1 more or shrimp for $1.50 more. A veggie option also is available. Next, select a sauce: Hawaiian Teriyaki (regular or spicy), Jamaican Jerk, Bali Island or Honey-Orange. Finally, select white or brown rice, or for 79 cents more, the Rumbi Rice or noodles. Entree salads start at $8.49 and include Voodoo with jerk seasoning, feta and homemade sesame-ginger vinaigrette, and Calypso with spinach, bacon, mandarin oranges, sliced almonds and balsamic dressing. Burgers and sandwiches are $7.95 and feature Kahuna and Rumbi burgers with two beef patties. The Luau pork sandwich has slow-roasted pulled barbecue pork. Entrees are $7.99 to $11.95 and include Volcano-blackened fish ($11.95) with mahi mahi or salmon with Mango Passion aioli. The Cabo fish tacos are $8.99 and feature blackened seasonal fish with zest and jalapeno-ranch dressing. For dessert, try the pineapple upside down cake. Sides include tempura shrimp, Rumbi Fries (a mix of regular and sweet potato fries), chips and salsa, and soups and salads. Little Kahunas (children’s meals) are $4. Daily specials are offered Monday through Friday for $6.99. Rumbi Island Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
