The definitive ranking of Thanksgiving pies — POLL

Although Patti Labelle's sweet potato pie has undoubtly proven to be a hot commodity this Thanksgiving (a representative for Wal-Mart has said they sold one pie per second for 72 hours straight over one weekend), believe it or not, sweet potato pies are not the most popular pie choice for Thanksgiving desserts.

With dessert being the most important part of some meals — and 94 percent of people saying they eat at least one piece of pie on Thanksgiving, according to Crisco — in an effort to please your guests, here's as close to a definitive ranking of holiday pies as we've been able to come.

According to a new study conducted by Kelton Global, pumpkin pie emerged as the clear cut favorite as nearly two in every five American adults, or 37 percent, chose it as their go-to Thanksgiving pie.

Trailing in a distant second, apple pie was the favorite among 16 percent of surveyors and pecan pie took third place with 14 percent. Closing out the double-digits, 10 percent of people chose sweet potato as their preferred choice.

At the bottom of the barrel, six percent chose chocolate pie, five percent selected cherry pie, four percent preferred lemon meringue or blueberry pies and two percent preferred a flavor that wasn't included in the survey.

The study also concluded that a surveyors sex and location was a significant factor in determining pie preference.

Based on the results, more women preferred pumpkin pie than men (40 percent versus 33 percent). On the contrary, men were more likely to chose cherry pie than women (seven percent versus three percent).

Southerners were three times as likely to opt for sweet potato pie versus people who live in other regions. Along those same lines, Northerners were more likely to choose apple pie than any other region.

How much does Las Vegas love pumpkin pie?

In order to test how accurate the findings of the study were, when it comes to Las Vegas locals, we asked bakeries in town to weigh in on their Thanksgiving pie sales. According to representatives from Freed's Bakery and Albertson's and Vons' bakery departments, the findings are pretty spot on when it comes to pumpkin pie being a clear-cut favorite.

Freed's Bakery, a staple in the Las Vegas Valley for over 50-years, said pumpkin is their number one-selling flavor.

"We definitely sell more pumpkin than any other flavor of pie … We generally sell 4x as much pumpkin pie as we do any of the other flavors," Max Jacobson-Fried said.

Albertson's and Vons' publicist, Nancy Keane, said something similar.

"Our bakery pumpkin pies are the number one, best-selling pie between Thanksgiving and Christmas," she said. "We always make sure to have fresh pumpkin pies available because that’s what our customers want."
