View Dining Pick of the Week: Dougie J’s Cafe

Dougie J’s Cafe

603 Las Vegas Blvd. South, 702-862-2344

To say Dougie J’s Cafe is all-American would be an understatement. The small dining room is decked out in shadowboxed military uniforms, a giant folk art American flag, a reproduction of the famous end of World War II kiss and a painting of the restaurant’s namesake, U.S. Army Spc. Douglas J. Green. Co-owner Suni Chabrow opened the place in honor of her son, who was killed at age 23 on Aug. 28, 2011, during his second deployment in Afghanistan. Chabrow started a foundation in his name that is dedicated to delivering care packages to members of the military, too. The food at Dougie J’s Cafe ranges from the healthy salads and soups to the decadent build-your-own burgers and sandwiches. Portions are large, and most dishes are accompanied by regular, garlic or sweet potato fries or fruit or a Caesar salad. Some of the unique offerings are the Gaelic Interpreter, a rich sandwich featuring macaroni and cheese grilled with bacon and cheese crackers on sourdough bread, or there’s the Pink Diablo, which is a peanut butter, bacon and banana sandwich dipped in batter and rolled in frosted flakes. Breakfast is served all day. Menu prices average around $10. Dougie J’s Cafe is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Should restaurant surcharges be legal? Here’s what economists think

The hotly debated surcharges have grown in popularity among restaurateurs, who say they rely on the fees to afford increases in labor costs or to boost pay for back-of-house workers who aren’t tipped.
