Gastropub Public School 702 aims to be class act at Downtown Summerlin
July 3, 2015 - 8:05 am
Public School 702 takes its name to heart in its school-themed project on the second floor of the dining arroyo at Downtown Summerlin. The decor includes blackboard and wall bleacher accents, world globes hanging from the ceiling and school paraphernalia galore. Cocktail napkins resemble lined school paper. The menu mimics a composition book.
But that’s all to be expected from a place that promises “an education in the art of food and beer.”
Here, happy hour is called “Recess” and features items such as Parmesan truffle fries, crispy ahi tuna tacos and PB and J sliders. Oversized bottles of select beers to share are for “Group Study.” Orders to go are dubbed “Homework.”
The pub-like menu has burgers starting at $10. Unique choices include the Colorado Lamb Burger with tomato cranberry jam, arugula and Brie on a brioche bun, and the BBQ Bison Burger with whiskey barbecue sauce, Emmental cheese and pepper bacon mushroom topping. There is also a crispy chicken sandwich with shaved Brussel kale slaw, tomato, sweet carrot habanero aioli and mustard bbq, as well as a chicken burger, dubbed the C.C.B. (The Handheld Cobb) with smokey tomato jam, avocado, bibb lettuce, crispy bacon and a fried egg.
Less red meat-intensive and heavy dishes include the roasted poblano with quinoa and PS 702’s “infamous” Bacon Cheddar Tots. There are also bangers and mash with two grilled chicken and herb sausages and bacon Brussels mash, the adobo tacos (two of them with roasted chicken and two with braised short ribs), beer-battered fish and chips, chorizo and shrimp campanelle, and grilled salmon.
No school menu is complete without pizza, and Public School 702 offers four types: the Margherita, wild mushroom and Taleggio, house pepperoni, and fig and prosciutto.
There are six salads to choose from, including kale Caesar and grilled watermelon/tomato stack.
Desserts include Lemon Meringue, tangy lemon curd, pecan graham cracker crust and marshmallow-like meringue, and the Nutella Cookie Sandwich with bacon brittle, chocolate chunk cookies and vanilla bean ice cream.
Menu prices average $11 to $30. Public School 702’s kitchen is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and Sunday.
Recess (happy hour) is from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. A weekend brunch is planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
