3 CDs you need

Three recommended new CDs released this week:

The Muffs, “Whoop Dee Do”: How great is it to hear Kim Shattuck at it again? The Muffs haven’t put out a new record in a decade, but their attitudinal pop punk still sounds as fresh as it did on curled-lip ’90s gems like “Blonder and Blonder” and their self-titled debut. Glad Shattuck got booted from The Pixies a while back. She’s too cool for the current incarnation of that band anyway.

Jenny Lewis, “The Voyager”: She lived in Las Vegas for a time as a kid, but Jenny Lewis is as Californian as bad driving and overpriced real estate. Her latest solo record, and first in six years, is alternately sunny and disconsolate, pretty and pained, the kind of album suited for both dancing and soothing a broken heart.

Mark Lanegan, “No Bells on Sunday”: How fitting is it that Lanegan is opening some of the dates on Nick Cave’s current U.S. tour? The dead-voiced, black clad singer is, in many ways, Cave’s American equivalent, a titan of song whose repertoire is equally grim and gorgeous, as further evidenced by his latest five-song EP.
