Covering ’90s pays off for Vegas band

Though the four band members of Speed have been together for three years, they recently adopted their new name and, along with it, a new sound.

"I like to think we've cornered the '90s market with Speed," says lead singer Scott Hartshorne.

The band plays everything form the 1990s, including Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Bush and anything that was big, he says.

A member of the local rock/country band Evenflow, Hartshorne wanted to start a '90s cover band a couple of years ago.

"I was getting really frustrated because I was told there was no market for it yet," he says. "There was no following for Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden none of those '90s bands."

So they did other things, covering the '70s and '80s and even doing country. One night a few weeks ago, Hartshorne asked his bandmates if they could play all '90s stuff during an Evenflow gig at Green Valley Ranch.

"We decided we would play all '90s songs that night and see how it went," Hartshorne says. It went so well, "I don't think we took a break. The managers and bartenders said we were what they've been looking for for that room."

The next day, the band had a contract.

Speed plays from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays in Quinn's Irish Pub at Green Valley Ranch.
