Readers sometimes ask why people search for the foods of their youth. Simple. It’s because those foods are connected to fond memories. I well remember the first Big Boy I had. It wasn’t Bob’s, but another franchise, and it was quite the big deal in the days before the ubiquitous Big Mac rendered special sauce not so special.

It happens more frequently than one would expect. "The problem," a caller will say, "is that I can’t find any real Chinese food in Las Vegas."

Longhorn BBQ

In Texas, Memphis — any of the old-time barbecue capitals — the legendary ‘cue venues have these great big stone or brick or other-fireproof-material pits, where they burn hickory or mesquite or other woods of choice. The pits usually are coated by decades-long accumulations of smoke and grease and we-don’t-really-want-to-know-what-else, and they and the hardy soul who gets up at 3 in the morning to stoke the fire and smoke the meat produce the stuff of which legends are made.

It seems hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalks these days — I wonder if that would work with nonstick cooking spray? — so it’s appropriate that today, we have eggs in the news.
