Ross’ return to Caesars: First and last or first of many?

How does Diana Ross stack up on a list of ideal traits for taking over some of Celine Dion’s canceled shows at Caesar’s Palace? Let’s see.

Hits from more than one decade? Check. The span from the Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go” to Ross’ “Chain Reaction” covers almost 20 years. You can stretch it to the ’90s if you’re from the U.K., where “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” was a big hit in 1991.

Gay icon status? Uh, the song is called “I’m Coming Out.”

Costume changes: Philadelphia magazine wrote of a June tour stop, “She left the stage while the band vamped on ‘Love Child’ and returned with a rousing performance of ‘The Boss’ in a sparkly black gown accompanied by a truly ridiculous/breath-taking neon green fuzzy floor-length mink.”

Being ready and willing to do this thing? Well, that is the question.

This summer’s “In the Name of Love Tour” had a light schedule compared to many road warriors. But it is a turn-key, ready-to-go 80 minutes that starts with “I’m Coming Out,” ends with “I Will Survive” and has plenty of costume changes in the middle.

So whether it’s the first and last or first of many, Friday’s show at the Colosseum will let everyone see how it fits.
