Puppy Bowl 2016 to feature Las Vegas pup

This Sunday, two teams will go head-to-head in the ultimate competition  the Puppy Bowl.

The 12th annual Puppy Bowl, which aims to raise awareness for pet adoption, offers an alternative for those who are not fans of the Super Bowl, which airs the same day.

The filming of "Team Ruff" and "Team Fluff" took place back in October, and this year the competition features a couple of new four-legged friends. Kittens, hamsters and a tortoise are expected to make an appearance.

"We have a few new participants. (Referee) Dan has a sidekick this year, another being in stripes, a little skunk who is going to be helping out with some of the calls," executive producer Melinda Toporoff told CNN.

For Las Vegas locals, the big excitement is that, like last year, one of our own will be joining the starting lineup. Toby, an 18 week old Maltese from the Nevada SPCA will be playing for Team Ruff. He will be competing with dozens of other dogs for the title of MVP — Most Valuable Puppy.

Toby will available at the NSPCA for adoption following his small screen debut.

Puppy Bowl airs Sunday, Feb. 7 at 3/2c.
