Blame it on the Rain

A few unexpected accessories made debuts on the 67th Annual Golden Globes red carpet.

First, a downpour of rain caused celebrities to add umbrellas to their ensembles. Second, the disaster in Haiti made for the colorful "it" ribbon of the moment (we, personally, find cash donations far more stylish). And, last, those who either didn't have handlers to carry their umbrellas or ended up sharing one with an umbrella hog, wound up sporting huge raindrop splashes on their ridiculously expensive dresses.

If we didn't know the designers throw their gowns at any celebrity willing to catch one (and they're all willing), we might feel sorry for the folks who got drenched.

Other than the rain, the most noteworthy surprises came from the women in black. It's normally the safest bet, but a few ladies proved one wrong move easily can destroy the color's solid reputation. Jennifer Aniston either had to climb a fence to get into the ceremony or she really did mean to rock a slit up to her pubic bone. Lea Michele could've snuck the entire "Glee" cast under the billowing skirt of her Oscar de la Renta number. And, January Jones of "Mad Men" added an unnecessary headband to an already-a lot-to-look-at Lanvin dress.

That said, plenty of damp red carpet walkers impressed us, too. Emily Blunt's cotton candy-like Dolce & Gabbana strapless gown spurred a sweet tooth craving. Anna Kendrick's creamy complexion got the full salute from her Marchesa one-shoulder sparkling dress. Toni Collette shimmered in a beaded, golden Elie Saab number that hugged her firm frame. And, Marion Cotillard's one-shoulder Christian Dior gown with a lace peekaboo feature in the slit was a bold move, well executed.

Here's a look at the best and worst dressed of the evening:

BEST DRESSED

Drew Barrymore: She's known for taking Russian roulette-type risks on the red carpet, but this champagne Atelier Versace gown, with its shoulder and hip embellishments, complimented Barrymore's figure so well it made us forget the actress talks out the side of her mouth with a lisp.

Sandra Bullock: This purple Bottega Veneta confection worked wonders for Bullock. The transparent skirt, ruched bodice, naked neckline, drop earrings and cascading curls are enough to forgive the bleached big hair look for which she won a Golden Globe.

Penelope Cruz: This is how a black dress is properly done. The lace features and body-hugging silhouette of this Giorgio Armani Prive gown give the actress' Spanish culture a nice nod. The trumpet skirt alone makes us want to roll our r's.

WORST DRESSED

Tina Fey: Not even a "Spoon Full of Sugar" could make this Mary Poppins homage go down better. At least she's well-prepared for the weather, what with her flood-proof hemline and all. Hey, the good news is Fey just executed one of her best jokes yet.

Diane Kruger: A former model, Kruger has it easy. So, why does she want to make things difficult by selecting this Christian Lacroix dress so horrifying that wearing it could've passed as one of the torture tactics used in "Inglourious Basterds"?

Kate Hudson: Just like she does with the men in her life, Hudson made the wrong choice here. Don't get us wrong, we dig the origami trend, but this one's bodice is so structured it makes us want to fold her Marchesa dress into a paper airplane and prepare it for take off.
