Resort wear: What is it and what’s its purpose?

What is resort wear and where does it fall in seasonal collections? Those questions come to our head every time we see pieces of printed linen or floral and ivory, peep-toed wedges, huge beach totes, knee-flowing dresses and menswear that would only be appropriate for having brunch in a midcentury garden (especially in January when the days are chilly and short).

What you see on stores shelves look like what's worn by the cast of "Orange County." Lightweight pieces and playful prints are perfect for weeks at the Hamptons and horseback riding on the beach.

High-end designers, specialty stores and labels have long been paying close attention to this time of year. It's become such an important time of year that during the '80s, high-end designers like Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Dolce and Gabanna added resort collections. People have loved and devoured the offerings from this mysterious category the moment it hit the fashion scene.

The question would be: How does Chanel's resort collection affect me? It probably won't. So, then, why has the notion of resort wear filtered all the way down to the Gap, H&M and Forever 21?

There are number of reasons, and one of the biggest is profit. Brands make a lot more money by pushing four collections a year rather than two. In addition to the extra bucks, in a lot of states, winter tends to be short or never visits them. In places like Florida, the Southwest, Las Vegas and California, the number of locals has grown in a big way in the last decades. Residents in these area do not need a wool coat to go to work. That's the reason why The Gap, Macy's and Dillard's carry bright colors throughout the year. There's a market for it.

What is resort wear?

When you get an invitation that says the dress code is "Resort Casual Wear," it may cause anxiety. Is it an outfit for the pool? Casual? Formal? Should I wear sandals or loafers? Are shorts acceptable? All this depends on the resort, cruise or reception you are attending, but here are some tips to consider when going to a "resort wear" reception.

Ladies

For ladies, resort wear can seem a little more complicated than for men because of the large amount of options. It's just like any other trend. Although collared shirts, khakis and linen pants are acceptable, when resort wear is required, women are expected to wear dresses or skirts. Go for a classy knee-length summer dress or skirt. Play with the colors, prints and silhouettes. Considering it's a more relaxed dress code, explore with bright colors, mix and match prints, or go for a color-block outfit. Wedges or flats are both a good way to go. For the upper body, boat neck necklines and wide straps are good choices. Tunics are a good choice, both printed and sheer embroidered. They are easy to wear for their cut and silhouette and easy to pair up with linen or khakis. Keep in mind, this is a discreet look, classy, erring on the reserved side. Think of the Duchess of Cambridge when choosing your outfit.

Gentlemen

Country clubs and cruises usually ask for polo shirts and khaki pants and loafers, and all of these are appropriate for resort casual wear. Collared shirts are not to be questioned, and you can choose between polo shirts or button-down. Usually, button-down shirts are more common during the night. Prints and colors are the fun part of resort wear, so don't be afraid to explore and match up your style. Prints, patterns and bright colors are absolutely appropriate. Khaki and linen pants are natural to this trend, but just keep in mind that both of these are closer to day wear. For dinner, shows and evening events, slacks will be your pick. Avoid sandals and flip flops and barefoot shoes. Go for loafers or a boat shoe. Resort wear does not necessarily mean Sunday at your pool.
