To Market, To Market!

If you couldn't scour the endless floor space at Las Vegas Market for the latest and greatest in furniture, fear not. Three of the best in the interior design business did it for you. Kishani Perera, Darryl Carter and Mary McDonald hosted the "Ahead of the Curve" seminar last week at World Market Center to discuss the top trends to emerge from Market. Here's a look at who they are and some of the trends they picked up during the trade show that always serves as an eye candy buffet for designers.

Kishani Perera

Design aesthetic: Pretty eclectic. I like to mix styles, periods and cultures.

Last place that inspired me: Market. There was this artist, Bryan Christiansen, that made me go, "Wow, genius."

Favorite room in the house: Bedrooms. It's your retreat, your personal sanctuary. I make it serene; whatever serene is for them.

Top trend from Market: Collections. Groupings of anything, like art, mirrors, pottery. (For instance) I saw old oil cans in a group of 10 on one wall.

Get rid of: Things you don't love. Find something you care about.

If you do it yourself: You'll always love it. It's the sweat equity. Even if it turns out bizarre, you'll take pride in it.

Best design tip: When on a budget, there's always a way around it. You just have to get creative.

Darryl Carter

Design aesthetic: Adaptive. Respectful of person, place, environment and, foremost, lifestyle.

Last place that inspired me: Inspiration is a constant. I dare say I find it in all things visual.

Favorite room in the house: Informal dining venue, emphasis on informal. I love these to have multipurpose so they are visited other than on holidays.

Top trend from Market: Finishes and textiles that put forward the idea of a return to things fashioned by hand, that are suggestive of wear and craft.

Get rid of: The superfluous. There is a tendency to hoard and overstate.

If you do it yourself: Sensibly collect objects for form, function and your own lifestyle.

Best design tip: Tread carefully. Amass visuals that appeal to you before making any purchase.

Mary McDonald

Design aesthetic: A little dramatic and formal, yet there's always something youthful and kicky.

Last place that inspired me: Market. I saw new ways to do things from designer Kenneth Cobonpue; totally original.

Favorite room in the house: Bedroom. It's the place I can make the most feminine and the husband isn't freaking out.

Top trend from Market: Woven and lattice furniture. ... Woven isn't just for outdoor furniture.

Get rid of: Chenille throws. I hate them. They look like something that belongs in an office.

If you do it yourself: Trust your instincts.

Best design tip: Paint your ceiling a color. You don't have to leave it white and it's a nice surprise.
