Fishing Report, March 28

■ LAKE MEAD — Striper action has picked up over the past couple of weeks. Anglers reportedly are catching fish as large as 20 pounds, with many coming in the 8- to 12-pound range. Gizzard shad and various plugs are catching the fish. Most of the activity has been found throughout the lower basin, especially in the area from Saddle Island to the back of Las Vegas Wash.

■ LAKE MOHAVE — The bite is on for largemouth and smallmouth bass. With the fish in spawning mode, working baits near rocks or stumps in the shallows should yield some hits. In a strange twist, one lucky angler fishing near Willow Beach hauled in a 28-pound striper while using PowerBait near mile marker 52. Another large striper weighing in at 26 pounds was taken at mile marker 49 on a Rooster Tail. It just proves that sometimes the unconventional will catch the big ones, as easily as using the tested and proven.

■ URBAN PONDS — Despite windy and cooler conditions, the urban ponds have received significant pressure from hopeful anglers. In recent days, trout have taken a liking to yellow PowerEggs and mealworms. Warm-water fish, such as bluegill and bass, should start hitting soon as water temperatures increase and the spawn ends.

■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Dacey Reservoir is producing rainbows from 12 to 16 inches in length. The fish are hitting flies and spinners. Cold Springs and Haymeadow reservoirs are producing smaller rainbows, and the action is fast. Fishing access on Adams-McGill Reservoir will not be a problem for boaters, float tubers and shore anglers. Upper ends are closed Feb. 15 to Aug. 15. Dacey requires artificial lures only, and only one rainbow per day may be taken. Campground water still is turned off at this time.

■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Fishing has continued to pick up over the past week, with most anglers catching rainbows in the 12- to 15-inch range using a variety of small spinners and lures, such as a Mepp’s or Kastmaster. Some anglers have done well using red, white and blue PowerBait. The campground is open, and water has been turned on.

■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Fishing from the dam has been especially good this week. One pair of anglers caught and released more than 40 trout in a couple of hours with small Mepp’s spinners. The fish averaged 11 to 13 inches long. The campground is open.
