CAMP SILVER PINES REGISTRATION OPEN

The annual Camp Silver Pines is scheduled to return to Clark County Parks and Recreation Sept. 17-19. This three-day/two-night camping experience for seniors takes place at the county’s Camp Lee Canyon. Participants stay in group cabins, eat all meals in the group dining hall and share group bathrooms. Activities, such as hiking, outdoor cooking, drawing, bocce ball, pickle ball, tai chi, guest speakers, high and low challenge course, arts and crafts, line dancing, painting, card and board games, make up the day’s schedule.

BATTERIES INCLUDED TEEN GAME NIGHT PLANNED

The city of Las Vegas invites area teens ages 13-18 to the third annual Xtreme Game Night, planned from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road. Youths can enjoy laser tag, dodgeball, the new foam pit, video games and hamster balls provided by Games2U Entertainment, as well as refreshments, music by a live disc jockey and raffles. Admission and activities are free. Youths will be able to sign up for Batteries Included Teen Councils available throughout the city.

The councils represent a diverse group of teens throughout Las Vegas dedicated to bringing the voices of youth into the community and raising awareness about achievements made by youths year-round. Teen councils are located at:

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION PLANS JUNIOR MASTER GARDENER OPEN HOUSE

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is planning Junior Master Gardener open houses, the first from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. The second open house is set from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Research Center and Demonstration Orchard, 4600 Horse Road.

View projects and collect program information on the upcoming fall sessions, which begin in September; speak with Junior Master Gardener Ambassadors; and experience a make-and-take project and tours of the children’s demonstration gardens. Registration for fall will be available during the open houses.

The Junior Master Gardener program is open to children ages 7-12. The eight-session-per-semester class fee is $52. Classes are set from 9 a.m. to noon every other Saturday.

TENNIS CAMP AND COACHES’ WORKSHOP SCHEDULED

A preseason High School Tennis Camp and a Coaches’ Workshop are planned at the Darling Tennis Center, 7901 W. Washington Ave. The high school tennis camp is set from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6. The cost is $10 for United States Tennis Association members and $20 for nonmembers, which includes a one-year junior membership.

The Coaches’ Workshop is set from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7 and is free.

The camp and workshop are designed to help players and coaches prepare for the upcoming high school season.

GARDENING WORKSHOPS PLANNED AT LIFELONG LEARNING CENTER

The next Gardening in Small Places workshops are landscape design, Aug. 9; using native plants in the landscape, Sept. 20; tree selection and care, Oct. 4; and growing fruit at home, Nov. 15 at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING SHOW SCHEDULED

An All-City Synchronized Swimming Show for all ages is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7 at Baker Pool, 1100 E. St. Louis Ave. The event is free and open to the public and includes synchronized swimming routines from Clark County, city of Henderson and city of Las Vegas teams. YOUTH SUMMER CAMP SCHEDULED

A camp for children is planned this summer at Life Time Athletic Summerlin, 10721 W. Charleston Blvd.

Called Powered Summer, the event is set to run through Aug. 22. Each week is to have a new theme and field trip, such as a Mission: Possible week and a trip to the bowling lanes at Red Rock Resort.

DASH AND SPLASH PLANNED AUG. 23

A Dash and Splash event is planned at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 23 at Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. The cost is $15 to preregister or $20 the day of the event. Attendees can do a 1.5-mile run and a 300-meter swim. For more information, call 702-229-1488.

FENCING CAMPS PLANNED BY RED ROCK FENCING CENTER

Introduction to Fencing Camps for ages 5 to 9 and 9 to 15 are planned from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Red Rock Fencing Center, 8352 W. Warm Springs Road.

Participants will learn sportsmanship, the art and skill of fencing and have fun in the process. Fencing teaches focus, determination, coordination and thinking skills. Participants should bring lunch, but equipment will be supplied.

Camp fees are $200 per week, with an early drop-off fee of $20 per day from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. The camp offers a 20 percent discount for siblings.

MASTER GARDENERS PLAN MONTHLY TOURS

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners plan free, monthly guided tours at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

The Demonstration Gardens contain more than 500 species of desert-appropriate landscape plants, including trees, shrubs, perennials, palms, cacti and agaves. Plants are identified by botanical and common names. The grounds are open for self-guided walks from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

To join the monthly tour, meet in the courtyard by 10 a.m. on the specified date. Walking shoes, water, hats and other appropriate items are suggested. Groups of five or more people are asked to call program coordinator Ann Edmunds at 702-257-5587 at least two weeks in advance.

CENTENNIAL HILLS ACTIVE ADULT CENTER OFFERS WEEKLY SENIOR FITNESS CLASSES

The Centennial Hills Active Adult Center plans to offer 25 weekly fitness classes for adults 50 or older from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at 6601 N. Buffalo Drive.

Classes include yoga, cardio dance and tai chi. The cost is $15 per month and includes use of the YMCA weight room and indoor lap pool for a limited time.

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, BLM PLAN FEE-FREE DAYS FOR 2014

The National Park Service is offering opportunities in 2014 to enjoy national parks without paying an entrance fee.

The dates are Aug. 25, National Park Service birthday; Sept. 27, National Public Lands Day; and Nov. 11, Veterans Day weekend.
