22-year-old man arrested in connection with Henderson shooting death

A 54-year-old man is dead and his 22-year-old son is in jail after a domestic-related shooting late Monday morning in Henderson, police said.

Police were called just after 11:30 a.m. Monday to 978 Painted Pony Drive, near Patrick Lane and Whitney Ranch Drive, where officers found one man dead of an apparent gunshot wound, Henderson police spokeswoman Michelle French said.

French described the shooting as a "family domestic situation." Three people were home when the shooting happened, police said.

Henderson police announced Monday evening that Daron Clanton, the son of the man who was found dead, had been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Clanton was arrested on an open murder charge, Henderson police wrote in a release Monday. He was booked into the Henderson Detention Center at 3:06 p.m., police said.

"Henderson Police have not been called to the house for any domestic violence issues in the past," the release said.

According to Clark County property records, the Painted Pony home is owned by Kevin and Maria Clanton, who bought the property in March 1993.

Traci Ferritto, who lives next door to the Clantons, said the couple moved into the neighborhood when it was built, about the same time she moved there.

She hasn't talked to the couple since she and her neighbors split the cost of building a wall between their properties when they first moved in, "but he seemed very nice," Ferritto said of Kevin Clanton.

According to Transparent Nevada, a public salary website, Kevin Clanton worked as a Clark County law librarian from 2007 to 2013.

Ferritto said the Clantons have at least one adult son who lives with them at their Painted Pony home.

"I'm shocked," Ferritto said when she learned the shooting was domestic-related.

Police did not release the name of the man who died. The Clark County coroner's office, which will identify the man who died, said late Monday afternoon that its investigators hadn't yet returned from the home.

This is the first homicide investigated by Henderson police this year, the release said.
