Metro on Sunday arrested a second suspect in the death of a woman police called an “innocent bystander” in an April shooting, court records show.
Michael De Angelo Scott, 21 was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Sunday. He faces multiple charges, including one count each of murder, conspiracy to murder, illegally discharging a gun and two counts of attempted murder.
Scott is the second person accused of the April 17 death of Cassandra Lee Cassidy, 24, of Las Vegas. Cassidy had encountered a pair of “fearful” women when she was pulling into her work at a recovery house owned by Solutions Recovery, in the 1300 block of Westwind Road, near the intersection of West Charleston Boulevard and Lindell Road.
The other suspect is a 15-year-old boy known as “Bro,”police said. His name has not been released because he’s a minor, but he was booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center when his mother turned him in on April 22 after seeing him on a video circulated by Metro.
Cassidy’s mother, Carol Kirkum, 55, told the Review-Journal on Monday that she is grateful for Metro and the community coming together and working diligently on the case. “They’re getting justice for my sunshine.”
On April 29, police released a photo of Scott and Jehru Petty-Williams, 18, and asked the public’s help in finding them. They spoke to them that day, according to a police report.
When questioned, Petty-Williams told detectives that he, his girlfriend Raven Gordon and Kawayna Ford had been hanging out all day and riding in a car with Scott and the teen.
Tension in the group grew, Petty-Williams told police, and Scott ordered the women to leave his two-door Volvo sedan.
Petty-Williams was concerned because he thought Scott and the teen were plotting against him and he knew they were armed, the report said. The women walked away. Petty-Williams got in the back seat and, with Scott and the teen, drove around looking for the women who had just left.
When they saw the women talking to Cassidy and asking for her cellphone to make a call, the teen got out of the car and began to shoot at the women, Scott shot a low-caliber gun from inside the car. The only person struck was Cassidy and the two other women were able to run.
Cassidy died at University Medical Center.
Scott, Petty-Williams and the teen visited a friend’s house after the shooting and the teen told her he “shot a white girl” and Scott told her he shot at the girls, but didn’t know if he hit anyone, the police report said.
Kirkum said that she will continue having doubts about what happened and hopes that everyone responsible is brought to justice.
