Artists cover graffiti in Zap 7 public art project
Artists took to the Las Vegas streets Thursday to reclaim what was theirs — and yours.
Vandals had tagged 10 specially decorated utility boxes along Maryland Parkway with graffiti, according to the Clark County commission. Local artists had painted the boxes as part of the Zap 7 public art series.
Graffiti on all the boxes looks similar, the county said.
Eight had been cleaned up by Thursday, but artists put the finishing touches on two of the boxes at the intersection of Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn.
Cleaning was estimated to cost at least $1,000, a county spokesman said.
Clark County Parks and Recreation tasked 20 artists with painting the boxes for Zap 7. Since 2005, the county has worked with artists in other art projects to decorate 96 utility boxes around the valley.
The county spends $1.6 million a year cleaning graffiti,Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said in a news release.
