Bay Area sends rain, clouds to Las Vegas Valley

A San Francisco Bay Area weather system that is causing all sorts of rain and snow in the Sierra Nevada is the reason for Friday's dark skies and scattered light rain.

Not much sun is expected for this weekend.

"We might get a little sun today, but not much, that's for sure," said Stan Czyzyk, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Las Vegas.

"We're catching the tail end of that weather system off the Pacific Coast, and it's not unusual for systems like these to cause light showers more than 500 miles away in the desert."

Some people would refer to it as Murphy's Law. Stands to reason that with the weekend finally arriving, the sun would suddenly shut down.

But all hope is not lost, Czyzyk said. The sun will start to peek through the low clouds by Monday, and from Tuesday through Thanksgiving, Las Vegas Valley residents can expect sunny skies with highs in the 70s.

But that's going to be then, and this is now.

"The morning is going to be our best shot for it, Czyzyk said.

But it's not like it's going to be a significant dousing or anything. Just a few light and scattered showers."

That same sort of weather will persist through the weekend, he said. "November isn't a real wet month for us, but it's certainly not out of the norm to get some rain."

All the same, Czyzyk said the weather is looking about normal this time of year, with highs in the 60s during the days and overnight lows in the 40s.

Not until December and January will the overnight lows dip into the 30s consistently, he said.

Today, the high is expected to reach 67.
