Cashman Middle School teacher faces judge on kidnapping, sex charges

A 28-year-old Cashman Middle School teacher appeared in court on Wednesday, less than a week after being arrested on charges of kidnapping and luring a mentally ill child younger than 14 years old for a sexual act.

Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Eric Goodman set a preliminary hearing in Mikhial Lerma’s case for next month.

The 28-year-old teacher was arrested Thursday on seven counts, including three counts of lewdness with a child under age 14 and one count each of luring a mentally ill child to engage in a sex act, first-degree kidnapping, child abuse and neglect and burglary, Las Vegas police records show.

Lerma is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.

Clark County School District officials said Lerma has taught at Cashman, near Desert Inn Road and Decatur Boulevard, since 2013. He has worked with the school district since 2010, having also taught at Sunrise Mountain and Cheyenne high schools.

Parents with concerns about their child’s interactions with Lerma should call Metro’s sexual assault section at 702-828-3421. To remain anonymous contact Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555 or www.crimestoppersofnv.com.
