Clark County boosts fees for shooting complex

Shooters are going to start paying more to use the Clark County Shooting Complex.

The County Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved fee increases, with hopes that the facility will no longer burden taxpayers.

“We’re going to work hard and optimistically to get this to a break-even scenario,” Assistant County Manager Ed Finger told the board.

Initial budget projections show the complex falling short by about $251,905. It has operated in the red since its opening in 2010.

The goal is to break even through fee increases, combined with other cost-savings measures that include reducing staff hours and trimming back on hours to save on nighttime lighting and electricity costs.

“The shooting complex is in good hands,” said Finger, who is leaving the county this month for a job in Colorado.

The fee increases, which go into effect in July, cover a variety of activities. The adult rifle and pistol shooting fee will increase to $9 from $7 a day.

Rental rates for training rooms will increase, with different rates for community groups and commercial groups.

Rates are also based on the size of the room used — the complex has three sizes — and the length of time it’s in use.

For example, the rental fee for a room at the community rate for up to four hours that seats 90 people is increasing to $75 from $35.

The daily rifle/pistol fee for groups is also increasing, from $6 a person to $8 a person for community groups, and from $10 a person to $12 a person for commercial groups.

“We’re trying to keep our rates as low as possible and yet still achieve that break-even status,” complex manager Steve Carmichael said.

Thousands of people come to the complex each month for shooting and archery, according to county estimates. With about 2,900 acres, it has ranges for bows and arrows, rifles, pistols and shotguns, including skeet, trap and clay targets.

The complex is located at 11357 N. Decatur Blvd. in Las Vegas.
