Dehydrated hiker, dog rescued from Sloan Canyon

A woman and her dog were rescued from the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area on Saturday after first responders said she tried to carry the canine to safety.

The Henderson Fire Department responded at 2 p.m., according to a news release, and found the woman, 28, and the animal near Democracy Drive, which ends near the edge of Sloan Canyon, south of Anthem.

Emergency responders said the woman had been hiking with the 75-pound dog, a Rottweiler, boxer and mastiff mix for "several hours," when the dog cut its paws.

The woman tried to carry the dog back to her car, but got lost along the way, the release said. She called 911, and police found them about a half-mile off of a marked trail.

Both were treated for dehydration.

Las Vegas' official high Saturday was 101 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
