Dining Pick of the Week: Lou’s Diner

Lou’s Diner

431 S. Decatur Blvd. at Alta Drive; 702-870-1876

Louise “Lou” Lauber can be found holding court daily in the back booth of her diner. Walk over and say hello — she’ll be glad to meet you. Lou worked here for 25 years and has owned the restaurant for the past 16 years. The diner, with its nine-seat counter, reflects how real America eats. Lunch features fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken fried steak, chopped steak and spaghetti with meat sauce. Ask about the daily lunch specials. Breakfast is served throughout the day, featuring French toast, pigs in a blanket, pork chops or corned beef hash and eggs, eggs Benedict and three-egg omelets with hash browns, home fries or grits. Popular sandwiches are Monte Cristo, fried egg, open-faced New York steak, chicken salad, sourdough melt with beef and Swiss, grilled ham and cheese, BLT, hamburgers and assorted clubs, including the Catalina made with tuna salad and egg salad. There is homemade chili and soups, and desserts such as triple chocolate cake, cinnamon rolls, rice or bread pudding, and ice cream sundaes and milkshakes. Seniors have a strong selection of sandwiches and other specials. Breakfast starts at $4.35. Lou’s Diner is open from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
