Donation drop-offs: Where to go this holiday season

Southern Nevada residents and organizations are seeking toy and food donations for valley residents in need. A sampling of events is included below. Additional events can be posted on View’s Facebook page at facebook.com/viewnewspapers.

Valleywide

CrossFit Veni Vidi Vici, 3306 St. Rose Parkway, Suite 110, is set to host a one-hour toy drive from 10 to 11 a.m. Dec. 20, to benefit The Burn Foundation of Southern Nevada.

To bring in donors, CrossFit Veni Vidi Vici is making its own donation – a free CrossFit class during that same 10 to 11 a.m. timeframe. A $20 value, the class will be scalable so those of all levels of fitness can participate.

Participants are encouraged to bring one new, unopened toy.

Clark County School District’s Nevada Learning Academy at CCSD announced the start of the Home for the Holidays: Help a Homeless Teen Drive to benefit Project 150, a nonprofit that offers support services to homeless high school students in the Las Vegas area. The campaign is set to run through Dec. 22. Valley residents are invited to donate necessities, educational items and clothing for the homeless teens. Project 150 items needed include:

• Clothing: jackets, sweaters, beanies, gloves, sock, new male/female undergarments
• School Supplies: backpacks, college rule filler paper, notebooks, 1”- 2” View Binders, highlighters, flash drives, regular and scientific calculators, protractor /compass sets, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, black ink pens, pocket folders, binder dividers and combination locks
• Hygiene Essentials: hair spray, hair gel, shaving cream, razors, after shave, deodorant, colognes, perfumes, tooth paste, tooth brushes, mouth was, combs, brushes, sanitary napkins, tampons, make up sets, facial wipes, blow dryers and flat/curling irons
• Food: gift cards for fast food eateries, granola bars, Pop Tarts, ready-to-eat bowls, oatmeal individual packs, snap-top can meal items, microwave popcorn bags and fruit cups
• Miscellaneous Essentials: bus passes, and Payless Shoe Store gift cards, purses, custom jewelry accessories, belts, wallets, food and grocery store gift cards and department store shopping bags with handles

The Nevada Learning Academy at CCSD, 3050 E. Flamingo Road, will serve as one drop-off point. Additional drop-off locations are at the valley’s three Crazy Pita locations and Fisher & Phillips LLP, 3800 Howard Hughes Parkway, Suite 950. Staffers and students at Nevada Learning Academy will gather items and stuff backpacks on Dec. 23.

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada is planning free meals from 11 a.m. to noon Dec. 14 and 10 to 11 a.m. Dec. 25 at the St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility, 1502 N. Main St. Call 702-385-2662. The nonprofit plans to give toys to clients throughout December, and several drives are planned to benefit the group:

• Warm Coats Warm Hearts through Jan. 20. Bring a new or gently used jacket to any Burlington Coat Factory and receive 10 percent off at the store.
• Parnell Electric, 2911 Meade Ave., is collecting toys through Dec. 11.
• St. Joseph Husband of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 7260 W. Sahara Ave., is planning a toy drive Dec. 5-7.
• Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive, is planning a toy drive Dec. 13 and 14.
• Our Lady of Las Vegas, 3050 Alta Drive, is planning a toy drive Dec. 13 and 14.
• St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2300 Sunridge Heights Parkway, is planning a toy drive through Dec. 11.

Rachel’s Kitchen restaurants are taking gift donations for the annual CASA Foundation Angel Tree event. Holiday boxes have been placed in five neighborhood Rachel’s Kitchen locations through Dec. 11. The CASA Foundation of Las Vegas’ annual Angel Tree Toy Drive is planned through Dec. 12, with drop-off locations available across the valley, including Rachel’s Kitchen, Credit Union 1, Distill — A Local Bar and Remedy’s Tavern. CASA, in partnership with Wirtz Beverage of Nevada, is set to host an Angel Tree Party on Dec. 13, when volunteers will wrap toys, pass out gifts and entertain children and their families with Disney princesses, face painting, food, games and a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. PT’s Entertainment Group, operators of PT’s, Sierra Gold and Sean Patrick’s taverns, plans to support 98.5 KLUC’s 16th annual Chet Buchanan & The Morning Zoo Toy Drive as its holiday charity. New, unwrapped toys, children’s bikes, gift cards and monetary donations are being accepted at any of the 43 PT’s or Sierra Gold locations throughout the Las Vegas Valley. The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive; the Centennial Hills Community Center YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive; the Bill and Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane; and the SkyView YMCA, 3050 E. Matt Smith Physical Therapy is hosting a toy drive through Dec. 12 to benefit Light of the World Childhood Cancer Foundation, an organization that provides programs to those affected by childhood cancer. Arizona Charlie’s Casinos customers will have the opportunity to provide a holiday meal to those who might otherwise go without, when they contribute their ace | PLAY points during the holiday season. The third annual Feed a Family program allows ace | PLAY members to contribute any amount of points by visiting the ace | PLAY Center at either Arizona Charlie’s Casino location through Dec. 15. The Las Vegas Review-Journal is collecting nonperishable food items, new or gently used coats and blankets and new, unwrapped toys for the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, 480 W. Bonanza Road. Toys are being collected through Dec. 15, food through Dec. 31, and coats and blankets through Jan. 31. Drop off a donation at the Review-Journal’s office at 1111 W. Bonanza Road and receive a complimentary newspaper.

Southwest

KLUC’s 16th annual Chet Buchanan & The Morning Zoo Toy Drive is set through Dec. 15 at NV Energy, 6226 W. Sahara Ave. New, unwrapped toys, bicycles and gift cards are to benefit HELP of Southern Nevada. Volunteers are needed for several of the nonprofit’s holiday efforts, such as assisting clients with their applications for holiday programs, a toy drive and distribution of donated items. North

A canned food and toy drive is planned at the Cowboy Christmas and Car Show, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, 9200 Tule Springs Road. The 20th annual Shoes for Children Drive and Benefit Performances are planned at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 and 2 and 6 p.m. Dec. 13 and 14 at the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. The one-act musical “Once on This Island,” a retelling of a peasant girl who uses the power of love to bring people of different social classes together, is planned. New pairs of children’s athletic shoes sized to fit preschoolers to high school youths will be accepted at these benefit performance events. Donations will also be accepted through Dec. 23 at all Las Vegas-Clark County Library District branches. All donated shoes will be distributed to children within neighboring elementary schools and local charities. Summerlin

Sahara Ave., has a community donation drop-off station for the Shade Tree’s first Gift of Holiday Hope drive to collect new and unwrapped toys for shelter children, ages newborn to 18. The 11th annual Toys for Tickets All-Star Jam is planned for 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at Sunset Station, 1301 W. Sunset Road. The event is set to feature artists such as Big & Rich, David Nail, Frankie Ballard and more. Tickets are available to anyone who donates a new, unwrapped toy worth at least $10 to Findlay North Volkswagen, 7500 W. Azure Drive, or Findlay Honda Northwest, 7494 W. Several Henderson post office locations are accepting toys through Dec. 18 to contribute to Toys for Tots. Individuals can drop off items at the Henderson Main Post Office, 404 S. Boulder Highway; the Valle Verde Post Office, 1575 Horizon W. Ridge Parkway; the Seven Hills Post Office, 3055 St. Rose Parkway; and the Green Valley Post Office, 2722 N. Green Valley Parkway. Residents who cannot drive to these locations may give toys to their Henderson mail carriers. The gifts must be new and unwrapped.

Leadership Henderson and the Henderson Chamber of Commerce plan a mixer from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 18 at Miller’s Henderson Ale House, 594 N. Stephanie St. Donations of new and unwrapped toys are set to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Admission is $10, and reservations are required by Dec. 17. Gimme Some Sugar Bake Shoppe, 19 S. Stephanie St., No. 160, plans to welcome Santa Claus from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 16 for an evening of holiday fun to benefit Three Square food bank.
