4. The Henderson Saddle Association fundraising event: The event is set from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the stables, 6490 Wiesner Way. Crafting for a Cause: Participants can knit or crochet items, such as scarves, hats and mittens, during the Henderson Libraries event, set to benefit The Caring Place, a Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation program that helps those touched by cancer. Queen Green book launch: A book launch for "Save Queen Green! Rockin' Art of Sloan Canyon: In partnership with the city of Henderson and the Friends of Sloan Canyon, the Inspirada community invites valley residents to participate in the inaugural contest. Photography and artwork must be inspired by the ancient art, geology, cultural and natural resources and flora and fauna of the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area. The categories are: photography for participants 15 or older; photography for high school students; and two artwork categories for elementary and middle school students. The public is encouraged to vote for favorite entries during the People's Choice judging period, which will identify 26 winners, determined by the entries that receive the most likes at facebook.com/inspiradanv. A judging panel will identify one contestant from the winners as the Best of Show grand prize recipient. The Farm Fall Festival: Barn Buddies Rescue @ The Farm is planning its Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 17-18, Oct. 24-25 and Oct. 31 at The Farm, 7222 W. Grand Teton Drive. Vegas Valley Book Festival: The 2015 festival is set for Oct. 15-17 in downtown Las Vegas and at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. The largest annual literary event in Nevada, the festival brings together a wide variety of literary genres and cultural programs, with most events taking place Oct. 17 at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St. More than 120 authors and 50 events are planned, including panel discussions, keynote speakers, readings, book signings, workshops, vendor exhibits, art exhibitions, spoken word performances and other special programs for a diversity of genres, ages and cultural backgrounds. Keynote speakers will be Brad Meltzer, author of "The Inner Circle," "Book of Fate" and "The President's Shadow," and Colum McCann, author of six novels and two story collections and the recipient of the National Book Award for "Let the Great World Spin." "Breathe Onto the Mirror": The exhibit by Jacqueline Ehlis is planned to run through Nov. 8 at The Studio at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Ehlis is the chairwoman of the art department at Portland Community College, and her work incorporates the interaction of color, light and reflection, reminding the viewer that they are the vehicle that interprets and is part of the works through their reflection in the mirrors.
