Newsmakers, June 25-July 1, 2015

On June 2, the Las Vegas Emblem Club No. 114, a community service organization, awarded its first scholarship to two Clark County high school seniors: Hannah Borguilla from Southwest Career and Technology Academy and Cassidy Nicole Campbell from Cowan Sunset High School. Borguilla is the daughter of Anthony and Virginia Bruce of Las Vegas, and Campbell is the daughter of Debra Campbell of Las Vegas.

Travis Michael Knemeyer of Troop 931 received his Eagle Scout badge after collecting and installing cabinets and display cases for the USO office at McCarran Airport. His parents are Tami and Robert Knemeyer of Henderson.

Sean Flynn, a sophomore at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance, was selected as a violist for the Oregon Mozart Players, a 35-member professional Chamber Orchestra based in Eugene, Ore. Flynn is a 2013 graduate of Las Vegas Academy. He is the son of Teri Flynn and the grandson of Steve and Mary Springer of Las Vegas.

In May, Mollie Scott Stewart received the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women’s Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg Crest Award in honor of her community service. Stewart is committed to making a difference in the lives of children with heart conditions and does so through her support for the Children’s Heart Foundation.

Journalist Hannah Birch was part of a team at the Seattle Times that won a Pulitizer Prize for its breaking news coverage of the Oso mudslide in Washington state in March 2014. She is a 2012 graduate of the UNLV Greenspun School of Journalism.

Dr. Guy Bennallack Jr. of Las Vegas graduated May 31 from Touro University in Valencia, Calif., with a master’s degree in public health and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a graduate of Centennial High School. His parents are Guy and Karrie Bennallack.

P.E.O. Chapter Y members Laurel Andrew and Pat Ritter presented The Meadows School senior Sydney Lee with the P.E.O. Star Scholarship for the 2015-16 school year. Lee is the daughter of John and Pauline Lee of Las Vegas and plans to attend Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada announced that former United States Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has been chosen to receive the 2015 Emilie Wanderer Civil Libertarian of the Year Award.

Army Pvt. Kevin J.F. Crawford Jr. graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Crawford is the son of Arlicia and Kevin Crawford of Las Vegas and is a 2014 graduate of Quest Preparatory High School.

Army Pvt. Jackie S. Vito graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Vito is the daughter of Jack and Lemau Vito of Las Vegas and is a 2014 graduate of Sunrise Mountain High School.

Air Force Reserve Airman Joshua E. Parker graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Parker is the son of Michelle Mercer of Las Vegas and David Parker of Monett, Mo. The airman graduated in 2007 from Cimarron-Memorial High School.

Christopher Antoku, Dominique Banks and Presley Banks, all of Las Vegas, graduated May 16 from Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D.

Air Force Airman Oshay M. Lawson graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Lawson is the son of David B. Lawson of Las Vegas and Wendy M. Valentine of San Jose, Calif.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Mauricio Ortiz graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio. Ortiz is the son of Herbert Ortiz of Las Vegas and is a 2012 graduate of Las Vegas High School.

Ryan A. Sufleta of Las Vegas graduated May 9 from Park University in Independence, Mo.

Army Pfc. Ycela P. Franco graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Franco is the daughter of Elizabeth and Roberto Franco of North Las Vegas and is a 2010 graduate of Shadow Ridge High School.

Tyler Lee Springer, Sarah Elizabeth Fanning and Kayla Jean Nielsen, all of Henderson, graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln May 8.

Army Pvt. Alexander B. Richard graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Richard is the son of Pam A. Ross of Las Vegas.
