Ex-boyfriend stabs woman’s current boyfriend, steals car

One man is in critical condition and a second is in custody after Las Vegas police said a woman’s ex-boyfriend stabbed her current boyfriend and then stole a car from the couple.

The woman called police at 12:04 a.m. Friday reporting the attack from from her home in the 6300 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard, near the intersection with Torrey Pines Road. The critically wounded man was taken University Medical Center.

It started, police said, when the ex-boyfriend knocked on the couple’s door, the current boyfriend opened it and got stabbed.

As the attacker fled, police said, he stole a car from the couple.

Almost five hours later, police said, the stolen car crashed into another vehicle in the intersection of South Decatur Boulevard and Pennwood Drive. At first, Metro spokeswoman officer Laura Meltzer said, the ex-boyfriend ran away from the crash.

But somehow, the driver of the other car convinced him to come back, Meltzer said, and police arrested him about 4:45 a.m.

One person was taken to a hospital after the crash. Details on who was hurt were not immediately available.

Juan Carlos Rivera-Abarca, 31, was taken into custody in connection with the stabbing.

He is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center and faces charges of attempted murder, burglary and grand larceny auto.

Meltzer could not confirm that the stabbing involved a love triangle, but she said the wounded man knew his attacker.
