Holiday traffic heavy on southbound I-15, leaving Vegas

Drivers leaving Las Vegas and headed to California on southbound Interstate 15 encountered heavy traffic delays until late Sunday night.

Traffic cameras about 9 p.m. showed a substantial amount of vehicles on the road, but traffic appeared to move more smoothly. This compared to the rest of Sunday when delays spanned for miles and vehicles were bumper-to-bumper.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers closed Las Vegas Boulevard South and the I-15 off-ramp both at Sloan due to traffic congestion, spokeswoman Chelsea Stuenkel said.

The delay and bumper-to-bumper flow at one point reached St. Rose Parkway, Las Vegas police tweeted early Sunday evening.

Drivers were recommended to take U.S Highway 95 through Searchlight to get to California.

An accident early afternoon near the Virgin River Gorge in Utah also caused delays for drivers heading north on I-15, Stuenkel said.
