Las Vegas Fire Department investigating downtown fire

The Las Vegas Fire Department is investigating a fire in downtown Las Vegas that broke out just after 10:30 a.m. Monday, fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

The fire occurred at a vacant two-story building located at 1418 S. Third St., near Utah Avenue, the department said.

The building is boarded up, but is known to have squatters inside, Szymanski said.

Flames could be seen coming through the roof upon arrival. "We immediately called for second alarm, which brought 25 pieces of equipment and 50 firefighters to the scene," Szymanski said.

It took the crew about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control; the blaze did not spread to other structures and no injuries were reported.

The fire's cause and the estimated cost of damage are under investigation, the department wrote in a release Monday afternoon.

"There are indications that homeless people may have been staying in the building," the release said.

It appeared homeless people were using the same vacant building in July 2014 when a fire broke out in one of the stairways at the end of the structure. The cause of that fire was undetermined, the release said.
