Las Vegas Fire Department plans 9/11 tribute
September 6, 2016 - 4:51 pm
The Las Vegas Fire Department will hold a community remembrance Sunday in tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11.
A longtime tradition in the fire service known as the “tolling of the bells” will be used for the remembrance.
The public is invited to join firefighters at any of the city fire stations during the tribute. A special ceremony will begin at 6:45 a.m. at Fire Station Five, 1020 Hinson St., where a U.S. flag that once hung over the World Trade Center will be hoisted to half-staff.
On display in front of the fire station is a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. The city of New York has requested that the World Trade Center flag be flown over the piece of steel at half-staff each Sept. 11. It has been done every year since the city of Las Vegas received the flag in 2004.
At 6:59 a.m., the time of the south tower collapse at the World Trade Center, a bell will be rung in front of Fire Station Five for the tribute.
