Man arrested for DUI after girl killed in crash

One child was killed, a toddler is in serious condition and a 70-year-old man was arrested for DUI after a Saturday afternoon crash in the northeast valley.

Las Vegas police responded just before 3:40 p.m. Saturday to the crash at East Carey Avenue and Sandy Lane where a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 had rear-ended a 1993 Toyota Corolla, Metro said in a Saturday night press release.

Witness statements and evidence at the scene suggest that the 24-year-old driver of the Corolla, Robert Gonzales, was stopped in an eastbound lane on Carey, just east of Sandy, talking to a pedestrian from inside the car when the Dodge Ram crashed into the back of the car, police said.

Gonzales, 34-year-old passenger Josefina Sanchez, and two girls, 2 and 3 years old, were taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. The 3-year-old was pronounced dead by medical staff.

Charles Washington, the 70-year-0ld driver of the Dodge Ram, was arrested on charges of DUI related to death and DUI related to substantial bodily harm, the release said.

Washington is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.

A passenger of the Ram truck ran from the scene after the crash, police wrote in the release.

The identity of the girl who was killed in the crash will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office.
