Man arrested in January home invasion has history of similar offenses

A man linked to a series of 2010 home invasions was indicted on Tuesday in a January incident where several masked gunmen broke into a south valley residence and held captive a woman and two children while they burglarized the home, Las Vegas police said.
Jovan Machel Carter, 28, was arrested on Feb. 13 on a non-related battery charge and was booked into the Clark County Detention Center. He now faces 14 charges, including home invasion and kidnapping with a deadly weapon, according to the arrest report obtained Friday by the Review-Journal.
Shortly after 2 a.m. on Jan. 22, police were called to a home near the intersection of Southern Highlands Parkway and Valley View Boulevard.
A woman heard a window break and saw three to four masked men enter the home, she told police. The men followed her upstairs where two children were in a bedroom, police said. A man watched her and the children while the other men took several belongings, including the family vehicle, a BMW SUV.
She called police and her adult son, who had gone downtown with the children’s mother, said police.
The children’s mother told police that sometime before the burglary, she had a problem with a woman who was associated with a “Jovan Carter.”
A search on a pawn shop database determined that Carter had gone to Max Pawn the day after the burglary, police said. Receipts from the shop showed that Carter pawned luxury shoes that were taken from the house, police said.
Carter’s extensive court record in Clark County goes back a decade. He was last jailed on Feb. 13 on a battery charge.
He pleaded guilty in 2011 to one burglary count, two drug counts and a count for possession of a weapon by a felon. The convictions were related to a series of at least 15 home invasions in 2010.
