Moapa Valley crash leaves 3 dead, 2 in critical condition

A fatal crash Sunday afternoon in Moapa Valley left three people dead and two people in critical condition, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Just after 3 p.m., a silver Toyota sport utility vehicle with five passengers rolled over on Interstate 15 and mile marker 75, trooper Jason Buratczuk said.

“For unknown reasons, the vehicle entered into the dirt center median,” he said. “The driver overcorrected to the right and the SUV began to overturn and caught on fire.”

Four of the five passengers were ejected from the vehicle, Buratczuk said. The driver, a female passenger and a male passenger were pronounced dead on the scene.

The other two passengers, a male and female were airlifted to University Medical Center, he said.

Whether impairment, driver distraction or a vehicle issue factored in the crash is unknown, Buratczuk said. The case is still under investigation.

As of 5:30 p.m., the right southbound lane on the I-15 about a quarter mile from the valley of fire exit is down to one lane, he said. As of 8 p.m., all lanes are open.
