NHP: 3 children in SUV accident weren’t wearing seat belts
The three children who were ejected during a SUV rollover that killed a 9-year-old girl Wednesday morning were not wearing seat belts, according to a Nevada Highway Patrol initial investigation.
NHP said the driver, Wendy Carrion, 22, and six children were traveling north on Interstate 15 in a 2002 Ford Explorer. Carrion overcorrected her steering, according to NHP, and failed to stay in her travel lane, then lost control of the SUV, causing it to roll.
Three girls, 4, 6, and 9 years old, were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle, NHP said.
Nine-year-old Gabriela Casias died at University Medical Center. The 6-year-old remains in critical condition at UMC.
Carrion, two boys, 6 and 1 years old, and two girls, 2 and 4 years old, were treated at UMC and have been released, according to NHP.
Carrion did not have a valid driver’s license, according to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. She was convicted last year in North Las Vegas of driving without a license and for not properly restraining a child in a vehicle.
