Officer stabbed, man fatally shot in Henderson

A man was shot and killed after he stabbed a Henderson police officer early Tuesday morning, a department spokeswoman said.

Officers said they stopped the man at about 3:30 a.m. after observing him acting in a suspicious manner while riding his bicycle near a 7-Eleven store near Horizon Drive and Boulder Highway, said City of Henderson spokeswoman Kathleen Richards. Police declined to say what the man was doing to seem suspicious.

The man was belligerent and fought with the officers before pulling a knife and stabbing one of the officers in the upper leg, Richards said.

The officers pulled away and both fired their guns, striking and killing the man, Richards said.

The injured officer treated and released at Sunrise Hospital, Richards said.

The identity of the dead man will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office after his family has been notified.

This was the Henderson Police Department’s second officer-involved shooting of 2014. Both shootings this year have left an officer wounded.

The names of the officers involved will be released within 72 hours of the shooting.

Last month, Henderson police shot and killed Ryan Marone, 37, after he fired at officers from his home at 489 Flat Plains Ave. Officer Timothy Donnelly suffered a minor shrapnel wound.
