Officials identify officer, dead man in Wednesday shooting

Police have released the names of a Metro officer and the man he fatally shot Wednesday morning.

Officer Bradley Cupp, 36, responded to the Eagle Trace Apartments, 5370 E. Craig Road, near Las Vegas Boulevard North, just before 12:30 a.m. There he found a 43-year-old man threatening suicide and armed with a rifle, police said.

That man was identified by the Clark County coroner’s office as Francis Lamantia Spivey of Las Vegas.

Police said Spivey walked in and out of his apartment and fired shots into the air. When he began firing into an apartment, he was shot in the chest by a SWAT sniper.

Police said a medic with the SWAT team tried to save Spivey, but he died at the scene.

Cupp has been with Metro since September 2003. Police said he was assigned to their Emergency Operations Bureau and SWAT section.

He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending review of the event.
