Vacant house destroyed in fire

A house in an 80-year-old neighborhood was destroyed in a fire Monday afternoon, Las Vegas firefighters say.

The fire was reported just after noon Monday at 1115 Fifth Place, near Charleston and Las Vegas Boulevards.

The house, which was one-story and had an attic and basement, was already engulfed when firefighters arrived. They fought the blaze for more than an hour from outside the house before getting it under control, fire spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

No one was injured — the house was vacant and neighbors told firefighters squatters have been using it for shelter, Szymanski said.

Damage was estimated at $150,000 by investigators and the cause of the fire was not yet known.
