Vegas police shoot man aiming gun at them

Metro police shot a man at a hotel near the Stratosphere early Saturday morning after he pointed a gun in their direction, police said.

An employee at the Shalimar Hotel Las Vegas, 1401 Las Vegas Blvd., South, called 911 about 12:45 a.m. when a hotel resident reported that shots had been fired, Capt. Matt McCarthy said.

The employee went to the hotel‘s back parking lot and noticed that a man, only identified as a "white male," was sitting on the ground and holding a gun. Police said he was a guest at the hotel.

The employee then called police. When officers arrived, they saw a man come out of one of the rooms "brandishing" a gun before he pointed it in the officers‘ direction, McCarthy said.

Each of two officers fired at least one shot at the man, McCarthy said.

He was taken to University Medical Center and is expected to survive.

The officers‘ identities will be released after 48 hours.

This is Metro‘s fifth officer-involved shooting for 2015.
