Woman injured in apartment fire dies

A woman who was critically injured in an apartment fire on Tuesday near downtown Las Vegas has died, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

The woman, believed to be in her mid-60s, died Tuesday evening at University Medical Center. She was found unresponsive about 2 p.m. in a burning apartment in the 300 block of South Maryland Parkway, near Bridger Avenue. She was taken to the hospital with severe burns.

Firefighters believe the fire started on a mattress in the living room. The investigation shows that the woman, who had health and mobility issues, was in bed and tried to escape. Firefighters also found smoking material in the apartment, which did not have a smoke alarm.

The fire has been ruled accidental and the damage was estimated at $70,000.

The woman’s identity will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office once next of kin has been notified.

This is the department’s first fatal fire this year.
