Woman sentenced in fatal November 2014 hit-and-run

A 30-year-old woman was sentenced to six to 15 years in prison Tuesday for a hit-and-run crash that killed a man while he was pushing his granddaughter in a stroller.

Michael Grubbs, 63, was struck and killed by Galina Kilova's Honda Civic as she veered off the right side of the road on Rainbow Boulevard near the intersection of Warm Springs Road the morning of Nov. 24, 2014, prosecutors said.

A Clark County jury deliberated about 15 minutes last month and found Kilova guilty of one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident.

At Kilova's sentencing hearing, Grubbs' sister and two daughters said they forgave Kilova but asked District Judge Jennifer Togliatti to send her to prison.

"I hope she learns from this," said Vicky Fortune, Grubbs's sister. "Both sides were hurt terribly."

Kilova left the scene of the crash, but turned herself in to police a week later.

Kilova, who came to the United States from Bulgaria in 2006, testified at her trial that she didn't notice hitting Gubbs because she was afraid and distracted by an angry driver following her in a Lexus.

Prosecutor's said Kilova's story that she didn't know she struck Grubbs was simply not believable and contrary to the testimony of eyewitnesses.

She said she went to work that day and saw damage to the right side of her car, but didn't start believing she had anything to do with the crash until she saw a news report of Grubbs' death later that day.

Eventually, Kilova said, she called her lawyer and made arrangements to surrender.

In 2007, Kilova was convicted in a DUI crash and was "very uncooperative" with authorities during the investigation, prosecutors said.

Earlier in 2014, Kilova also was cited for having an open container of alcohol while in a vehicle.
