FEMA aid authorized for Southern Nevada flood area
President Barack Obama has issued a disaster declaration to allow federal aid for a Southern Nevada area affected by severe storms and flooding in early September.
The declaration signed Wednesday makes state, tribal, and local entities and certain nonprofit organizations eligible for federal cost-sharing funds for emergency work and repairs on the Moapa Band of Paiutes Reservation, according to the White House.
Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Craig Fugate named Mark Landry as federal coordinating officer for the affected area.
Thunderstorms spawned by the remnants of Hurricane Norbert dumped as much as 4 inches of rain in two hours Sept. 8 in the rural Moapa area northeast of Las Vegas.
That created flooding on the reservation and washed out a stretch of Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
