Woman booked after police chase shut down I-15

A woman who ran from Utah law enforcement and whose ensuing chase temporarily shut down a stretch of Interstate 15 near Mesquite faces criminal charges, according to a police report.

Sandeep Kaur, 24, of Union City, Calif., led Utah and Nevada highway patrols on a July 31 pursuit that closed the highway in both directions for about an hour, according to the report made public Wednesday. NHP said at the time the driver running from police was a suspected bank robber.

Mesquite police were notified of a bank robbery in St. George, Utah, just after 4 p.m. They received word the suspect was headed south on I-15, already being followed by Utah and Arizona police.

Kaur crossed the Nevada line at a high speed, continuing the pursuit by Mesquite police.

Police and NHP put down tire spike strips twice during the chase. Kaur’s tires deflated and the vehicle came to a stop about 15 miles outside of Mesquite.

A Mesquite police officer ordered Kaur to get out of the vehicle, but she refused. Officers from other agencies arrived shortly after.

After numerous commands to exit the car, Kaur rolled down her windows and told officers to shoot her, according to the police report.

Kaur then said she would take a pill to commit suicide if she were arrested. She told police she wanted to see her sick grandmother in Canada.

She surrendered after about two hours of negotiations and was arrested by the Mesquite Police Department on charges of obstructing police officers, failure to stop vehicle to police officer and reckless driving.

Kaur is scheduled for a court appearance Aug. 13 in Mesquite Justice Court.
