1 dead in vehicle crash in southwest valley; 1 driver flees scene

One person has died after a crash in the southwest valley Thursday night.

The three-vehicle crash happened about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of West Flamingo Road and Redwood Street, near the Flamingo and Rainbow Boulevard intersection, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Corey Moon said.

A Ford Shelby GT500 Coupe carrying a driver and passenger was westbound on Flamingo before crossing the median, according to a Metro release. A Nissan Titan pickup and a Chevrolet Cobalt sedan were driving next to each other in the eastbound Flamingo lanes, and they each hit the Shelby’s right side. The Shelby’s passenger was a 27-year-old woman who died, the release said, and its driver — identified only as a man in his 20s — took off from the crash site without providing information.

The driver’s whereabouts remain unknown as of early Friday morning.

The Titan and Cobalt drivers went to University Medical Center with minor and moderate injuries, respectively.

All westbound lanes of Flamingo Road at Torrey Pines Drive were blocked for several hours as police investigated.

This was the 104th traffic death in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2016.

The coroner’s office will name the person killed once family has been notified.
