Henderson to launch 3 road projects

The city of Henderson is getting on the fuel tax revenue indexing bandwagon.

City officials on Thursday announced plans to launch three projects on heavily traveled roadways that are being partially paid for with funds generated by the 6-month-old indexing fund already tapped by the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas and Clark County.

The new projects will cost a total $4.6 million and provide 60 jobs.

Councilwoman Debra March, who represents Henderson as the vice chairwoman of the Regional Transportation Commission board, presided over a kickoff ceremony near two of the projects.

Officials say work will begin on the projects next week and will be completed by the end of the year. Projects will include replacement of asphalt, sidewalk ramps, and creation or restriping of bicycle lanes.

City officials say the projects likely would result in occasional lane restrictions through the construction zones.

Some details on the projects:

— On Warm Springs Road between Arroyo Grande Boulevard and Stephanie Street, asphalt pavement and sidewalk ramps will be replaced and bike lanes will be restriped to be made more visible. The $1.3 million project is creating 17 jobs. Aggregate Industries is the contractor for the project with Stewart and Sundell and Mc4 hired as subcontractors.

— On Eastern Avenue between Coronado Center Drive and Silverado Ranch Boulevard, asphalt pavement and sidewalk ramps will be replaced and bicycle lanes will be installed providing better access to shopping centers and businesses along the corridor and St. Rose Hospital. The $1.1 million project is creating 14 jobs.

— On Whitney Ranch Drive between Russell Road and Arroyo Grande Boulevard, the street will be repaved, sidewalk ramps will be replaced, bike lanes will be installed and a traffic signal at Patrick Lane will be built. The $2.2 million project is creating 29 jobs. Las Vegas Paving is the primary contractor with Triple J Trenching and Highway Signage and Striping as subcontractors for both the Whitney Ranch and Eastern Avenue projects.

March said bus turnouts would be included in the work to enhance the multimodal transportation plan for Henderson. She added that providing bicycle lanes has been a popular feature for city streets and that they have helped raise property values in neighborhoods.

The projects are being funded by fuel tax revenue indexing, which is expected to raise more than $700 million for 199 transportation projects providing an estimated 9,000 jobs over three years.

Tied to the producer price index, the system enabled gasoline stations in Clark County to collect an additional 3.25 cents a gallon in fuel tax in January. The tax on regular gasoline was increased on July 1 to 6.6 cents a gallon.
