Las Vegas police ID man who died after April 20 scooter crash

Nearly four months after a Las Vegas man was critically injured in a motorized scooter crash, Las Vegas police said Tuesday Kristopher Torrez has died.

The crash happened just after 12:30 p.m. when Torrez, 31, was driving a scooter north on South Valley View Boulevard just north of Desert Inn Road and lost control. The scooter began sliding sideways, fell onto its side and threw Torrez, who was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Police were informed of Torrez’s death by the Clark County coroner’s office on May 25. Torrez died of his injuries April 22 at University Medical Center, police said.

The coroner determined his cause of death as blunt force head trauma and the manner as an accident. Police were informed of the coroner’s findings on Aug. 2.

A large trail of oil that leaked from a black sport utility vehicle just north of where the rider lost control caused the crash, police said.

The driver confirmed he had mechanical difficulty before this collision, police said at the time of the crash.

This was the 61st traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2016.
