Some downtown streets to close for Super Bowl tribute 10k Sunday
February 4, 2016 - 1:22 pm
Several streets in downtown Las Vegas will be closed Sunday morning for a charitable running festival.
Streets within Las Vegas Boulevard to the west, Fremont Street to the north, 11th Street to the east and Hoover Avenue to the south will be closed for the Big Game 10K Running Festival, a tribute to Super Bowl Sunday.
Major streets to be closed include portions of Las Vegas Boulevard, Seventh Street and Hoover and Carson avenues. The starting line will be at Ninth Street and Carson and the finish at 10th Street and Fremont for the 10-kilometer course, which winds throughout downtown.
Street closures are scheduled between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.
In addition to the 10k race there will be a 5-kilometer race, a kids' fun run, a costume contest, a team competition and a "combo challenge" for the running of both races.
The second annual festival event benefits the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, a charity that provides disadvantaged children and children in crisis with new shoes and socks, as well as other items deemed essential for good health and positive development.
Henderson resident Napoleon McCallum, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and College Football Hall of Fame member who played six seasons with the Los Angeles Raiders, will serve as honorary host and official starter for the event. McCallum is director of community development of the Las Vegas Sands Corp.
Several activities affiliated with the running festival are planned downtown during the event, which is scheduled to begin with the fun run at 7:20 a.m., the costume contest at 7:30, the 5k race at 8 and the 10k race at 8:30.
