SMALL SCHOOLS: Thompson leads Pirates’ perfect team score in Class 3A boys region meet

Moapa Valley left little doubt Friday which is the top boys cross country team in the Class 3A Southern League.

Josh Thompson’s first-place effort led the Pirates in a sweep of the top five spots and captured the Southern League meet at Laughlin’s Mountain View Park.

Thompson won the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 27 seconds, with teammates Chase Witter (17:15), Milas Sendlein (18:58), Shae Bryant (19:05) and Brendan Watkins (19:07) taking the next four places as the Pirates posted a perfect team score of 15.

Boulder City was second with 44 points, but only the top team and the top five individuals on a non-qualifying team advance to next week’s Class 3A state meet.

The individual qualifiers were: Boulder City’s Harrison Brown (19:24), Richard Vince (20:04), Chandler Harkins (20:15) and Nathan Richner (20:40); and Virgin Valley’s Javier Gonzalez (20:57).

CLASS 3A GIRLS

Boulder City’s girls coasted to the top three finishes and easily advanced to next week’s state meet.

Stephanie Adams took first in 20:47 for the Eagles, followed by teammates Jessica Tobler (21:27) and Dana Prach (23:24).

The Eagles had a team score of 19. Virgin Valley was second with 50, followed by Moapa Valley with 61.

Individual qualifiers for the state meet were: Virgin Valley’s Hailey Bunker (24:06), Victoria Magoon (26:42) and Maggie Mulliner (26:50); and Moapa Valley’s Jessany Mortensen (24:13) and D.J. Carter (27:17).

CLASS 2A BOYS

Brian Romero and Cody McGeshick grabbed the top two spots, helping Laughlin’s boys capture the Class 2A Southern League title at Mountain View Park.

Romero won the 3.1-mile race in 18:27, with McGeshick placing second in 18:42.

Laughlin had a team score of 19. West Wendover was second with 38. Both teams and the lone individual from a non-qualifying team — The Meadows’ Henry Halkyard — move on to next week’s state meet.

West Wendover’s Jose Landeros placed third in 18:46.

The Meadows’ Megan Alexander had no chance of getting to the state meet as a member of a qualifying team, at least not with the Mustangs only fielding two runners.

She didn’t need any help, though.

Alexander won the Class 2A Southern League girls race in 21:41, punching her own ticket to state.

Laughlin, led by a second-place finish from Kemberly Mejia (22:36), was the lone full team to compete.

West Wendover’s Trinity Smith (23:00) and Ambar Rodriguez (23:49) also qualified for the state meet as individuals.
