ROUNDUP: Chavira’s late hit gives Rancho win in Gorman Desert Classic

Gabe Chavira singled home Scott Koenen with one out in the bottom of the sixth to give Rancho a 3-2 win over visiting Boca Raton (Fla.) in the Bishop Gorman Desert Classic on Thursday.

The Rams trailed 2-0 entering the inning, but Zak Qualls led off with a home run. Brandon Pletsch followed with a double and scored from second on a passed ball to tie the game.

Pletsch finished 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and a run scored for Rancho.

Eric Holdren scattered six hits and struck out three in a complete game to get the win.

Rancho 7, Alta (Utah) 5 — At Rancho, Pletsch batted 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and stole home in the bottom of the sixth to help the Rams past the Hawks.

Qualls struck out four of the five batters he faced to get a save.

Arbor View 9, Lone Peak (Utah) 8 — At Hadland Park, Nick Urban led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and later scored on an error as the Aggies edged the Knights.

Urban was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs, and Colton Hinrickson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run for Arbor View.

Bishop Gorman 10, Southridge (Fla.) 2 — At Gorman, Johnny Field and Erik Van Meetren each doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead the Gaels.

Chris Tulak allowed no earned runs on five hits in six innings to get the win. He also struck out six and walked two.

Riverton (Utah) 4, Durango 1 — At Durango, the Trailblazers couldn’t erase a 4-0 deficit after two innings in a loss to the Silverwolves.
Mike Neighbors went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Durango.

Mater Dei (Calif.) 8, Durango 2 — At Durango, the Monarchs scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull past the Trailblazers.

Ricky Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI for Durango, and teammate Josh Hull was 2-for-4.

Shadow Ridge 3, Cyprus (Utah) 2 — At Durango, Brandon Show's triple with one out in the bottom of the ninth scored pinch-runner Gil Colon to give the Mustangs the win in the Orange Bracket.

Colt Stout went the distance, allowing one earned run on eight hits, to get the win. He struck out nine and walked none.

Trent Kinney went 3-for-4, and Stout was 2-for-4 with a double for Shadow Ridge.

Cyprus starter Regis Mears allowed no earned runs in seven innings with 10 strikeouts.

LIONS INVITATIONAL

Vista (Calif.) 5, Green Valley 3 — At San Diego, the Panthers led 4-0 after two innings and held on for a win over the Gators in the Mike Morrow Lions Invitational.

Cameron Harper hit 2-for-4 with an RBI for Green Valley, and teammate Scott Arn added two hits.

Carlsbad (Calif.) 16, Silverado 5 — At San Diego, the Lancers used a pair of big innings to cruise past the Skyhawks.

Bobby Johnson was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI for Silverado.
